Nancy Pennell   Painter/Printmaker

Born in Lansing, Nancy Pennell moved to Flint in 1968 and is a lifetime resident of Michigan.  Growing up in an artistic family, she was introduced to painting at an early age by her father, who was a commercial artist.  While pursuing her formal education in art at MSU, earning a BFA, she was introduced to printmaking and found she had a real "feel" for the medium.  This new introduction opened up great possibilities, making her not only a painter, but also a printmaker and multimedia artist.  She now hones her skills at MCC and various workshops throughout the country.  She has shown her work in countless galleries throughout Michigan, winning awards in several competitions. She is currently affiliated with Buckham Gallery, Flint Artist Market and The Blue Heron Gallery in Elk Rapids, MI.  For over twenty-five years she has taught art classes and given workshops. Her work hangs in many private and public collections throughout the United States.

Her work incorporates the melding of various printmaking techniques, including monotype and waterless lithography, with her view of the world landscape and mapping.  By layering many transparent colors over one another and by manipulating the ink, she abstractly builds her compositions, capturing the essence of each place, both real and imagined.  Throughout the process, she relies on both her own artistic skills and vision along with the unexpected qualities of the media to produce her final artwork.
